Originally scheduled for September 2020, due to the pandemic, the date has now been moved to March 2021
Google announced that developers will have some extra time to adjust the site to adapt to mobile-first indexing. The new deadline is March 2021, which is more than 6 months away from the last deadline in September 2020.
The reason for this is to help those who need it because of the Covid-19 pandemic and still need to focus on other tasks. “Mobile version index first” started in 2016, and preparing your website for this is the key to SEO.
In March of this year, Google estimated that 70% of Internet sites had first indexed their mobile versions. Since mid-2019, all new pages have been indexed this way, so this number may have increased.
If you are not sure whether your website is already on the team, just go to Google Search Console to check it out. If your website is not designed for mobile devices or responsive, please don’t relax because of the delay, as this should have been done a long time ago.
Google Mobile Priority Index: postpone, but hurry up!
To put it bluntly: if the website only has a desktop version, it will no longer appear on Google in March 2021. It’s that simple. However, at this point of the championship, I believe this should not become your reality, right?
For example, on RD’s blog, we have been discussing it for many years. We have already mentioned this topic in our 2017 post on website speed. Then, in 2018, we analyzed Google’s AMP, or accelerated mobile pages. Most importantly, in 2018, we published a complete article on Google Mobile First Index, you guessed it!
So, all in all, sites that do not have a mobile version today (desktop version only) are still in the rankings. However, if they are not suitable for mobile devices, then their performance on Google’s results page is already very poor.
Always remember: search giants (and other things) prioritize user experience when providing answers to their surveys. In 2019, more than 60% of these were manufactured on mobile phones, and this proportion will only increase in the next few years.
In other words: Without a mobile phone, your website will go downhill.
Am I ready for Google Mobile First Indexing?
Okay, so you already have a mobile version of the company page. I know I can trust you! Nevertheless, it is worth checking whether it is fully prepared for the visit of the Google robot. It is the Mountain View employees themselves that will help you in-depth research.
In the post announcing the postponement, there is a short list of technical details, you can check or hit X, they will not be too complicated. They are as follows:
- Use the same robot meta tag as the desktop version;
- Fix slow loading (delayed loading) content;
- Be careful with the resources you block, such as files and images;
- Use the same main content from the desktop, the content you want to rank;
- Check images and videos-quality, alternative text, URL and location.
Google provides a comprehensive guide that contains everything you need to update your website to the Mobile First Index. It has all the content you need to place, so you don’t have to risk disappearing from the results page in March 2021.
However, it is worth emphasizing: don’t leave it at the last minute, thinking that it is still valid for 2020.
